I won't go into the many reasons why I have had to take out an old computer and start using it again. I don't want to cry.

Needless to say - its urgent.

It's a SONY VAIO purchased around 2005. IT runs Windows XP and I have installed and updated Mozilla Firefox, which is the only browser I am really willing to run.

THere is a lot of lag going on both during the loading process and while I am trying to work. This does not help my current situation.

I have been helped before by techguy and have even made a few donations over the years. I have even learned a lot (but retained only a small portion). I have gone back over a couple of posts and tried to use some of the advice posted there. However, much of it was particular to the computer I was using at the time and not applicable to this one.

I would greatly appreciate any help and advice. I do not KNOW that the computer is malware ridden or infected in any way - so help identifying the problems would also be welcome.

What should I do first?

What's the complete model number of that Sony VAIO, and is it a desktop or a laptop/notebook?

------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the

System:

Computer:

sections in the "General" tab - EXACTLY as you see it there.

------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

The first thing that pops up is your meager 448 MB of RAM. With XP nowadays, I would consider 1 GB a minimum.

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.

2- Run the program.

3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.

4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply. Do not attach it.

6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

First, I would uninstall Windows Defender. It's pretty useless.

Next,

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

Press Enter.

Select the Startup tab.

Uncheck the items related to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CreateCD_Reminder] C:\WINDOWS\Sonysys\VAIO Recovery\reminder.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [swg] C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe

Restart the computer.

After restarting, when the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Oh, and I see Symantec in there. If you don't need it, run the Norton Removal Tool.

Next,

Download, install and run the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Click Update > Check for Updates.

When the definition files have updated, click OK.

Click the Scanner tab > Perform quick scan > Scan.

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click Show Results.

Make sure that everything is selected, then click Remove Selected.

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click Yes.

Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again.

Click the Logs tab.

Highlight the scan log entry, then click Open.

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy and paste it into your next reply.

Sony VAIO laptop
Model PCG 9U1L

Microsoft Window XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Manufacture Info
Mobile Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
2.39 GHz, 448 MB of RAM
Besides that laptop having only 512 MB of RAM(minus 64 MB that's reserved for its devices), its processor is running at 2.39 GHz instead of at 3.20 GHz.

Go to Control Panel - Power Options.

Change the power scheme to Always On.

Click Apply - OK.

Restart the computer.

Go back to system properties.

See if the processor speed in the last line is now at or close to 3.20 GHz.

----------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager.

Click the + in IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

Double-click on Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel to open their properties window.

Click the "Advanced Settings" tab.

If any of the transfer modes are on PIO only, change it to DMA if available.

Click Apply - OK.

Restart the computer ONLY if you had to change any of the transfer mode setting.

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp% (% is the percent symbol in the number 5 key)

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.
