Well, generally all the office suits are backward compatible...so there's should not be any problem. Can you open that word file(s) on the old PC (World 97 as u mentioned?) If it is so, you might have some problem with this new PC office suit. :(
Try, making copy of the old files in old PC using save as or may be you can convert doc files (if you don't have some hi level formating) to rtf files. That can be opened in Wordpad comes with every Windows OS.
    This might help, i guess..

this is what it says when i open the folder :

the file may be in use by the another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters or the file may be currupt.

    hey iLLegaL89

try downloading and installing "quick view plus" from http://www.tucows.com/preview/302331.html

it opens 100's of different file formats and will let you copy and paste into word xp.

this is only a trial version and will run out in 30 days but should hopefully do the job for you.

If that doesnt open it then i would say your files have been corrupted :(

    hope it works
