So i recently killed my laptop (the screen broke) and i decided to get a new dell inspiron 15 7000 series laptop. I bought one of those adapters to attach to the old hdd and it works, it loads up and says its install Ext. Hdd and the necessary files and could take a couple of minutes but that's as far as it gets. I cant access the hdd as its just names removable disk and when i try to access it says i have to insert disk to drive. The old laptop was a Samsung NP350v5c-902AU. I have a lot of data i would like to access that i cant. The HDD is a hitachi 5k750-750. I am running windows 8.1.

    1. Welcome to Tech Support Guy

    2. What is this please
are we talking about a docking station or an enclosure and presumably it connects usb
Is it USB powered by single connection for both power and data or is it a Y USB lead to two usb connections

    3. Where on the Inspiron is it connected please - try another usb port

4, Is the connection recognised in device manager and if so what is it shown as please

    5. If it is listed in device manager under disk drives
Next, select Disk Drives from the list of hardware, right-click the USB external hard drive with the issue, and click Uninstall.
Following the uninstall, unplug the USB cable. Then, wait for a minute and reconnect the USB cable. The driver should automatically load.

    6. If it is not listed under disk drives
look again in device manager under USB or is there a listing under an unknown device

I think that laptop has 4 USB ports
I of them I think has a power symbol next to it like a lightning bolt -
    try another one

    screenshot
with device manager on the screen
    press print screen key
    then open paint
    click paste
then click file - save as
then change file type to jpeg
    save to desktop
on reply on this site click go advanced and manage attachments

please try and send screenshot - do not be annoyed but I do not like opening links

    1. Have you got that HP Envy printer connected
    If so disconnect it
REBOOT - as I said earlier connect external to other than the powershare usb port
see if that makes any difference

    2. If not safely remove device on taskbar notifications area - go device manager right click usb root hub and click uninstall.
REBOOT and then when it reports it has installed
    TRY then connecting device

    3. If still no joy go Control Panel Troubleshooting and run hardware troubleshooter with device connected

    4. Are we sure the drive itself is OK
