Solved Old Windows Photo Viewer

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to make the old Windows Photo Viewer The Default on Windows 10?

I used to be in IT Support and I've tried what I believe to be the standard method, a registry hack then selecting as default and that worked for some considerable time.

About three months back it simply stopped working, probably because of an upgrade (I'm on 21H1) and no matter what I do, I haven't been able to get it back. I can still do "Open with" but it isn't on my list of applications so I have to select "Choose another app", scroll down then "more apps" and finally I can select "Windows Photo Viewer". I cannot set that as default and, at NO POINT is there ever the option to make an application the default. I also cannot select it from "Settings" --> "Apps" --> "Default Apps".

Sure, I can rebuild my PC but I'd really rather not especially since I'm not convinced it'll even work.

Any ideas appreciated :)

James

EDIT: Interestingly, this seems to be a "pictures only" thing. If I do the "open with" thing on a video, then "Choose another app" I DO get the option to set as default.

Try this

Microsoft Store > top right click the 3 dots > Downloads and Updates > Get Updates

If that doesn't install Microsoft Photos app then use the search and the app should show then click get/install

NOTE: Get Updates will also get other Windows apps updates in the process

Thanks, I did that but I'm afraid that doesn't really bear on my issue.

I want the OLD Windows Photo Viewer (the one you still have if you upgraded from an earlier OS) to be my default viewer rather than the normal default for Windows 10. It's installed but I can't make it my default even though I have done the standard stuff.

What's interesting, as mentioned above) is that when I do "Open with" for a picture, I can't make it default but I can with videos (see attachments).

Hi.

Use the attached registry file to activate the Windows Photo Viewer. Unzip first.

After that, right click a picture > Open with > Choose another app > More apps

Find Photo Viewer and make sure to check the option Always use this app to open .jpg (or any other type) files.

Done. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

Something else is going on here because it worked once and now it doesn't PLUS there is no "Always use this app to open .xxx files" option (when doing the same with videos that option DOES exist).

I see. So the default option is missing (Always use this app to open...) for pictures.

Since the option is not missing for videos, I'm not sure if that works, but give it a try.

Unzip the attach reg file, double click to run it and check if the option is added.

Yes.

Unfortunately, it didn't. I've checked other associations (documents and music) and both have the "Always use this app to open..." box ... just pictures. I even tried a picture in the document folder just to see if that worked (if it was somehow folder related) and it makes no difference.

I think I may be headed for a rebuild which is irritating.

I never used it, James. Have in mind that using 3rd party programs has always a risk. Perhaps someone here has better/more useful opinions.

That's interesting!

Today I tried the same thing (that I couldn't previously do); it was fine.

I can't explain that but I'm marking this solved. Might be that SetUserFTA actually worked but required some restarts or some such?

Thanks for the help guys :)
