my brother in law used the computer while house sitting and bam! viruses galore. My wallpaper is hijacked, I get all kinds of security threat alerts saying i'm infected with spyware which lead to spyware removal advertisements, and IE quit working. I have xp professional and an out dated symantec. receive alerts indicating C:/tempar.bat is in quarantine. spy sweeper also says i have coolwebsearch, zenosearchassistant, and a few others. i also get messages about rundll32.exe, mssys.exe, trojanddownloader.xs. I removed something called mIRC, and some other files after reading some posts, but still having problems. Here is my hijackthis log:

I agree with AcaCandy's advice in your thread in Introductions.

Back up your important data, pictures, photos but as little as possible, wipe the drive, and reformat.

You will never be able to trust this system again and be 100% sure nothing remains. You also need to change all passwords for logins for web sites, financial institutions, bank account numbers etc.

When you reformat, you need to get a firewall as you don't seem to be running one and also get the latest version of Sun Java as you're running an older one and infections get through vulnerabilities that can be exploited in the older versions.

Also, be sure to get all MS critical updates and patches.
