Yesterday when I turned on my computer, after about 5-10 minutes, the login screen finally appeared. I typed in my password and waited about 10 minutes as it hung on the Loading Windows screen (it never showed my desktop). I rebooted and tried again; the same thing happened. I used system restore to 6 days ago, and nothing changed. I am now using Safe Mode with Networking, which works, but I can't figure out how to get my computer to load normally again.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance!

It is likely that something which loads on booting your computer is broken in some way (Safe mode doesn't load any of the usual junk that loads with Windows, which is why that works). I'll ask that you download the program HiJackThis and post its log file here so that people can see just what kind of things might be loading at that time. Do not fix anything! Most of those entries are necessary for your machine to function, you'll be advised on what to remove. I'll ask for someone whose properly trained and authorised to examine those logs to take a peek.
This may be a malware issue, in which case you'll be transferred to our specialised malware removal forum. It could equally be a bad install of something or the other, or some other cause. This however is the best way for us to get a look at your machine.

    To get the scan result

    • To the right of the green arrow under HijackThis downloads click on the Executable button and download the HijackThis.exe file to your desktop.
    • Double-click the HijackThis.exe file on your desktop to launch the program. If you get a security warning asking if you want to run this software because the publisher couldn't be verified click on Run to allow it.
    • Click on the Scan button. The scan will not take long and when it's finished the resulting log will open automatically in Notepad.
    • Save the log file to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your post.

Hmm...the computer has started to function properly again. I'm not sure what was wrong before. If I encounter these issues again, I'll try HijackThis and post it on here, but I guess if it's working now, there's no need.

    Thank you for your help!

Please ignore the last post that has been deleted as it was spam and we don't want you to follow those instructions.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart. (See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.
    Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Cookiegal, thank you for your response.

For some reason, when I click the link, the program downloads (I am using Firefox), but then I cannot double-click the mbam-setup.exe. I right-clicked it and my only options were "Go to Download Page" and "Copy Download Link." Does Safe Mode not allow you to install programs?

If you're still in Safe mode with networking. Is that the case? It must be if you downloaded it.

What happens when you double-click the file to try to install it?

Yes, still in Safe Mode with Networking.

When I double-click to download in Firefox, nothing happens. The file looks selected, but nothing installs.

I am using IE now. When I click the link, a window pops up titled "File Download - Security Warning." Inside the box, it says "Do you want to run or save this file?" in bold. My options are "Run," "Save," or "Cancel."

I first tried clicking Run. It downloads (to a "Temporary Folder"). Another window pops up asking "Do you want to run this software?" with options "Run" and "Don't Run." Clicked Run; nothing happened. Tried Saving it to my desktop and nothing happened...can't even find it on my desktop....

You want to save the file to your desktop and then run the setup.

    Try downloading from another source:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756

Click on one of the links below download locations or on the one that says Official Mirror.

It says it is saving to the Desktop, but when I go to check after it downloads, the file is nowhere to be found.

I tried downloading from the alternate source in both Firefox and IE with the same results as before. It says it's downloading, but once it finishes, I can't open it.

Have you tried to see if there are any system restore points available and if that would work to go back to before this problem started?
