Do you have any odt files on the computer?

If not, and you have doc or docx files, right click one of those files and select open woth Open Office.

Note: I use LibreOffice rather than Open Office.

Open Office out of the box can not open a pdf.
A extension is needed, as what I have read.
I am not a user of Open Office.

Editing a pdf is quite different than opening a pdf. To open a pdf, foxit, adobe reader, whatever can open however IF you want to edit, that is a whole different story.
I use master pdf editor to edit pdf files however that is a linux program. It works well however it does not run on windows.

Yes, it is free; almost all linux software is free [however not all]
You do understand that this program does not run on windows ie you must have linux installed as the operating system AND you must have at least a basic understanding of linux.
