If you want to delete the file types in the open with menu go to folder options and click on the file types tab. There you can delete or edit any of the file types;)

 No it is not the file types I want to delete. When you right click a file you will see an option to "open with". If you select "open with" a menu will pop showing a selection of executables like explorer, paint, wordpad, notepad, etc. I have so many selections and a lot of them do not exist anymore in my PC. How do I delete them?

You'd have to search the registry by keywords.

But also try this little app. It helps: <A HREF="http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,77428,00.html">ContextEdit</A>

    Succes,

Here's is how the entries list in the Open With box is created.
The registry is scanned. Any Program which is used in a command to open a filetype is added.

In Win98 SE, go to start>run and type regedit. Press enter.

    Go to edit>find
Let's say you wanted to remove MS paint from the list.
    Search for MSPAINT.
You are looking for any entry under Shell Open command. Look in the right pane.
    In this case here:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\shell\open\command
In the right pane, remove this:
    "C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\MSPAINT.EXE" "%1"

    MSPaint will now be gone.
Be careful nd back up the reg befroe you start removing things. That way you can double click and it will be put back.
Go to start>run and type this command.
    regedit /e reg.reg

This will put a copy of the registry on your desktop named reg.reg
    Double clickon it to enter.

I should add that this method is good for orphaned entries. If that program has been removed, removing an open command it OK. But anyone who wants to prune the entries in Open With, using this method will disable the ability to open certain file types. Not a good idea.
