my computer has developed a new problem, probably caused by something I downloaded (?). When trying to open new files/programs, it pops up the 'open with' menu, giving me a choice of which program I want to use! It used to do this automatically - is there any way I can get it to do so again????

Yes, there is, but first, about what file extensions are we talking here?

JPG, Bmp, Gif? Only image files, or other things as well?

Have you uninstalled/installed something recently, that could be responsible for this?

And, incidentally, welcome to the board! :D

If they are image files, yes, probably.
And in that case there's a handy reg file which can be imported as well.

But we're not sure yet whether they're (just) image files.

    Grtz.
