    OS and System RAM Limitations Guide.

    This is a guide for those not yet familiar with the various OS's RAM limitations & pitfalls, focusing on the three biggies (Mac, Windows & Linux - no offense to any of the others!).

    Related: Ask Dan: What's with the 3Gb memory barrier?

    You can install at least 4Gb of memory on most motherboards today, but apparently you shouldn't install more than 3Gb if you're not running a 64-bit operating system.

    Here is a link to the thread at the Linux Ubuntu Forums entitled: PAE kernel does not see all 4GB of RAM, and post #21 on page 3 of the thread and sanderj (the author of the Python script) provides the following link to his tool Check My Hardware which provides an analysis of CPU, BIOS, RAM, OS, and usable RAM for use of 4GB or greater capability.

    The command line invocation of the script is as follows (with Python installed):
    $ sudo python check-my-hardware.py

    Note: the use of root (admin) priviledges by use of the sudo command to execute the python script. This command normally exists in a Linux environment and with Python installed. (Not for Windows unless you wish to rewrite the Python code to use on a Windows system).
