    Hello,

I signin, type a long summation and hit submit and the forum tells me I'm not registered. Bummer. Very difficult to post without cookies.

I have Pentium II 233 MHz, 196 MIGs ram, 37 g hd. Running (trying to run) WinME, I E version 6. InoculateIT and Zonealarm.

WinME is slow, takes a long time to bring up new screens. It does not shutdown properly. I saved my Win98 I think. I checked the box when asked if I want to save it, should I want to go back.

I E version 6, is a problem with cookies. I have installed Mozilla, it works okay, just don't like it.

On repairing I E, got messages: "Version 5.50.4134.100 of file thumbvw.dll exist but the version needs to be greater than 5.50.4134.6. "File scrrun.dll is missing"

I checked on the net and the thumbvw.dll file that can be downloaded is the same size as the one I have. I can not tell what version it is. As to the file scrrun.dll, this is a complicated file to install.

Should I go back to Win98?

About ready to throw in the towel on this machine.

Does this call for a reformat, reinstall?

    Can you help a dummy?

Go to your User Panel > Edit Options on this page and make sure you are set to "automatically log in" and "browse board with cookies"; also make sure you have the right date set in your system time.

Then go here and get "HijackThis"

    http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/

Unzip, run it and click the "scan" button to create a log. Copy paste that log here.

    >> Then click Config > Miscl Tools > Generate Startuplog. And copy/paste that one here as well. Don't worry about the length, you should be able to get all of them in one window. If not, upload one as a text attachment.

I've been up a while and a little bleary eyed so I can't give your startups as close a look as I'd like. At first glance there's nothing unusual there. ZoneAlarm may be a part of your problem, but we'll see.

What you can do for starters is have a look at these two troubleshooting links for Clean-booting, and Shutdown issues. They will teach you how to use msconfig to troubleshoot and hopefully isolate problems. Is it hanging on the "windows is shutting down" screen?

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q273746

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q267288

You may have to uninstall and reinstall IE 6, but let's see if we can get you those two dlls. Scrrun.dll is easy, I can zip you that if you send me your e-mail addy in a pm

The thumbvw.dll may be a little more problematic, the one you want is probably this one:

    http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/moreinfo.asp?Id=206688

For some reason it's not present in my XP version of IE6

Good Idea! Goback to Win 98 SE. There is more support for that OS. After you reinstall win 98 Goto this link: http:// www.freedownloadscemter.com and download the following: The Big Fix. Easy Cleaner 1,7 or 20 Beta. RegFixer, and the Belarc Advisor.

Then goto AMS Software and download "Fast Defrag". You can also get the Easy Cleaner Beta from: http://www.toniarts.com . All of your Windows updates can be obtained from The Big Fix. The programs that I have mentioned are free to use and will greatly improved the performance of your computer.

If you need further assistance let us know.
