With the new virus scare, I have a question. When I open Outlook Express now, it shows the header in the top half of the screen, and it opens the message that is highlited in the bottom half of the screen. If that happened to be a virus it would already be open before I could do anything about it. How do I tell Outlook Express not to activate the highlite bar thereby not opening the message until I have read the header to determan if it is a virus. I am sure it is a very simple answer but I don't think my 30 years in computer maintenance prepared me for the hardware and software we use today !!!
    Thanks
    Fred

    Hi Fred,

Go to the "View" button and select "Layout"

This gives you access to the Layout window and allows you to disable the "Preview Pane" which is used to read messages without opening a new window for them.

    Another good idea:

    Select the "Security" Tab

Make sure it is set to "Restricted Sites"

This simple setting improves security, even with the defaults which were set when your Internet Explorer and Outlook Express were installed

    Good luck,

Could you tell me what this setting does? (besides making it more secure:) ) How does it do this? By not letting certain things thru? If so, like what would it stop?

    From Outlook Express Help:

"In Outlook Express, security zones enable you to choose whether or not active content, such as ActiveX Controls and scripts, can be run from inside HTML e-mail messages. You can choose a moderate security level that allows most active content to run, or you can choose a more restrictive security level."

The security zones we're talking about are the ones in Tools/Internet Options/Security.

If you highlight 'Restricted Zones' and choose Custom Level, you'll see that the security for most items such as scripting, cookies, etcetera is a lot tighter.

    Grtz.

is there a way of using the preview pane but not having it display the message until i click on it? if u start outlook wit preview pane selected, it automatically displays the latest email in the preview pan, and also u cant select the email to be deleted without opening it either.....

it sounds lazy and it sorta is, but if i dont use the preview pane i need to double click the emails, but obviously preview pane is easier...thing is, as previously mentioned, this means virus' can be opened without meaning to.

it may be impossible but does anyone have any ideas?

    thanks guys/dolls.

I think if you click on "VIEW" then "LAYOUT" then "PREVIEW PANE" then uncheck "SHOW PREVIEW PANE" then Click "APPLY" no messages should open when you go to OUTlook Express.
Let me know if it works.
