When using Outlook 2000 on a system with Windows 2000, I am promted to enter the email password every time I send or receive mail. I have attempted to enter the password in the account maintenance and save, but it does not retain the password.

Have you tried the Detect and Repair tool under the Help file?

Take a look at MS KB Article, Your Password Is Not Retained in Windows 2000 which deals with the symptom:

"When you run Outlook on Windows 2000 and connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to retrieve messages from a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) server, your password is not retained even though you have selected to save your password."

I tried the detect and repair, and it failed to correct the problem.

The MS article does not seem to fit my installation of Outlook.

I'll see what else I can find for you. I seem to remember that I once had a similar problem, but I'm not sure if it was 2000 or 2002. It was frustrating so I understand how you feel :D
