A friend is having difficulty w/ Outlook 2003 (he's a beta tester for it.)

When he receives emails that contain a link, and clicks on the link, a new window opens as it would normally when you click a link contained in email. However, instead of the correct web address appearing in the browser bar, what appears is this: http://%1 , plus the correct address.

Example: If someone sent him an email with the link http://www.google.com , and he clicked on it, a browser would open directing him to http://%1 http://www.google.com . He then has to remove the extra "http://%1%20" and redirect the browser to the correct address.

He wonders if anyone has any thoughts as to why a URL appearing in mail would add characters. He's using a Dell PC, IE6, WinXP-Pro. Thanks.

It sounds like your friend may be infected by CoolWebSearch. Could you ask your friend to go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Hello. Here is the log. After I reinstalled WinXP last night (it's a long story), now some type of installer fires when I click on a hyperlink but flashes and is gone. Can't make it out. But the extra characters are gone now when the browser opens.

Anyway, do you see anything suspicious in the log?

I'm running XP Pro on a Dell with a P4 at 2.53 GHz with 1.0 GB of RAM.

Thanks in advance and best regards.
