Is there anyway to share the outlook calender/contacts between 2 windows based pcs without the use of exchange server or a pricey 3rd party software?

The problem is that the information is stored on a .pst file and sharing a pst file between two computers at the same time is very bad (well at least MicroSoft says so). It is possible, If you are going to share the PST file between two computers and the computers will access the PST file at different times.

Alternatively and on both Computers, you could create a New Outlook Data file (.pst), add a Folder that contains Contacts and Calendars and synchronize the two with a utility like MicroSoft's SyncToy 2.0. The issues then would be to control the access and updating of the file so that changes do not get overwritten.
