My 1.9 GB .pst file for MS Outlook 2002 is not letting me download any more emails. It will also not let me delete any messages and I get the error. "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook." Restarting Outlook does not help as well as restarting the computer. I can send emails and that works, but receiving does not work. There aparently are 27 messages to download and it won't do it. I have already made a copy of the .pst file. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Outlook 97 - 2002 have a size limit of their PST's which is hard coded (due to the way they are formatted) of 2GB. This is the reason you are unable to download any new emails. My suggestion would be to either delete unwanted emails (spam or emails with large attachments - ensuring you empty the deleted items) or move some emails over tO a new PST (File - New - Personal Folder file (I think!).

Hope this fixes your problem! :)

Hi Domasmak. This is exactly what happened - although the error message does not tell you that you have come up against this 2 GB limit on the size of the Outlook.pst file. The problem was that I could not even use the typical delete because deleting an email was not allowed because it could not write to the trash. I eventually found that using (shift-delete) overroad the need to write the message to the trash and allowed me to delete enough emails to become "functional" again. I then went to Tools -> Options -> Mail Setup -> Data Files -> Settings -> Compact Now and I compacted my Outlook.pst file. This took the size from 2 GB to 1.3 GB and I am back in business. I write all this down in hopes it will help others. Thanks for the help!

Great! I just had this issue on my work computer this morning, I will have to rely on ctrl+shift for now because I'm on Outlook 97 and the compact button on the options does nothing. I'll have to manually compact the .pst file or something. I'll post my resolution when I'm done in case anyone still uses Outlook 97 (hopefully not).
