Outlook Express 6 compacted my emails and now I have lost a lot of really important stuff. Where do they go and how do I retrieve them. Thanks. PS I'm a beginner.

    Welcome.

Compacting should not "lose stuff", when you deliberately delete an email it leaves unused space within the email file.

Compacting just shuffles the remaining emails to better utilise that space, resulting in a smaller file.

In no way is it designed to delete emails that you need in the process.

Something else has occured I suspect? Did the word "Archive" crop up rather than compacting perhaps?

No but there was a message about something being in use in Outlook express so it stopped the compacting. I found the missing titles of my email folder in the recycle bin and restored them but still cant find them.

This MS note details where to find them and how to recover them.
