    I'm running Windows XP SP2.

    For the past few days Outlook Express has been asking me to compact my folders, which I've done.

    Well today it went haywire and crashed in the middle of compacting and I lost a bunch of messages out of several folders.

    Also, now every time I exit OE it automatically starts a compacting process without asking and freezes up (not responding) in the middle.

    What the haydizzle is up with this? Anyone heard of any problems like this or can suggest a fix???

    Thanks!!

    OE->Tools->Options->Maintenance Tab
    Do you have Compact messages in the background checked off?

    If so, uncheck it. That can lead to messages being lost just as you describe. It is best to manually compact folders.
    1) Only do it offline.
    2) Click File->Folder->Compact all folders

    Thanks for the replies.
    In the meantime I have gone in and just dumped a bunch of my old messages (I had'em back to 1999 if you can believe that!) and now everything appears to be working.
