With Outlook Express (OE) open and Inbox selected click the File menu; Point to Folder; Click Compact All Folders. Close then restart OE. Now try the export process. But first:

You do not Export messages in the fashion you describe. Please click on the following attachment for more information.

There will be multiple copies with same prefix of some folders is the reason why you note the string of numbers in the folder Properties.

To export your address book files (Contact List(s)

Open Outlook Express; Click the Addresses button; Insert a freshly formatted floppy disk in the [A] drive; Click the File menu, point to Export, and then click Address Book (WAB); Use the drop down arrow beside 'Save In' to select 3 1/2 Floppy [A:]; Type a name like 'Address Book Backup' in the 'File Name Box and click the Save button. Repeat this procedure for each identity as appropriate.
For all other address book formats:
In the Address Book, click the File menu, point to Export, and then click Other Address Book.
Click the address book or file type you want to export to, and then click Export.

To compact and back up mail folders

Select a mail folder, click the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Compact; All folders .
To back up the folder, find the folder file, and then copy it to a backup folder, floppy disk, or network drive. Outlook Express mail folders have a .dbx extension (for example, "Sent Items.dbx").

Notes
Some message files might be too large to back up onto a floppy disk.
If you are using a program other than Outlook Express to send e-mail messages to newsgroups, check your e-mail program's documentation for information about compacting and deleting mail folders.

With OE open; highlight Inbox for instance; Point to the File menu; Point to Compress; All Folders; Then you must do a search/Find for *.dbx. Some folders may be too big for a floppy, so you must right-click them and point to Properties to note the date and size.

After noting the most recent dates and appropriate size, or you may have to delete some mail inside after printing certain ones out - you can then right-click and point to Send to, 3 1/2 floppy [A:]. Repeat for each appropriate dbx file that's found.

Then on the new machine, you'd go into the same folder where Inbox.dbx resides (search for it , Start;Find; Files or folders to find the path to the file, Delete that Inbox.dbx that OE creates by default when new, and replace it with your old Inbox.dbx off the removable media of your choice. Repeat for the other folders as necessary.
