Hi Guys and Girls, I am running windows 98 and I came accross aa program that enhances Email called Annotis. I thought it would Jazz up my Email as I run a group called Happy Shakers for us people with Parkinsons. Thats why the double letters, sorry.
I did not have outlook Express on my computer. In order to download it I needed to download IE6 which I did. When I tried to download this Attonis I get an error message that says can't find MSIEXEC which I believe is the outlook express program. Trying to get some more information from Microsoft they say the requirements are 350mghz I only have 166mghtz. I reaalize that has nothing to do with the missing file but my computer has slowed to a crawl. I would like your advice. What should I do ? Caan I go back to IE5 and keep outlook express 6.? I believe you can't download outlook express by itself. I am really short of memory and I read outlook express takes quite a chunk. Would that missing MSIEXEC be the maain file for out look which is actually msien.exe. Your advice would be appreciated . thanks Larry

    Hello Larry!

The main .exe for Outlook Express is msimn.exe. MSIEXEC.exe seems part of the Windows installer. I have Win98 and that file is in C:\Windows\System.

I am not aware of your level of computer experience so please forgive me if I tell you do do things you already know. Can you click Start, then Find... then Files or folders. Type in MSIEXEC.exe and click find now. Let us know if you have that file on your computer.

P.S. Your computer seems to be a little bit on the old side. How much RAM (memory) do you have?

Here are Requirements from their website:

    • Minimum configuration: Pentium® 266 MHz 64 MB of RAM and 5 MB of disk space.

    • Operating System: Microsoft® Windows 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP, including Microsoft® Internet Explorer versions 5.01 to 6.0.

    • Microsoft® Outlook® Express 5.0 to 6.0, Outlook® 2000, Outlook® 2002 (Outlook® XP).

I am not sure you got my reply as I was taken to the login menu after I posted.

Thank you for getting back to me.

The MSIEXEC file I do not have on my computer. I do not have a Windows 98 disk as a virus wiped out a lot of files and the tech put windows 98 on when he repaired it.

I only have 48MB of RAM

I did not check requirements of Attonis as it was part of the package I got with the fun club. I didn't check the requirements for IE6 or Outlook Express either. Can I delete both of these and go back to IE 5 ?

    thank you, Larry

Hello Larry, how are you today?

Is your computer stable? Have you given up on installing the Annotis?

If your computer is operating stably, without errors then you don't have to change anything. I also have an old 166mhz computer that I don't use. If you find your computer slowing down, freezing or giving you error messages, you should consider getting more RAM for it. My old computer was only 64MB when I got it and I doubled it to 128 and I made a fantastic difference! RAM is the cheapest and most effective improvement you can make to any computer.

Thank you for your advice. The company had the file listed on thier website Where to download it . I downloaded the windows installer. It had the file I needed . Then after I installed the file it took me to the Annotis web site where it was right on the first page telling you what to do if that error message came up. Why they didn't list the website in the first place I don't know. after I installed and used the software the requirements are for a 266mghz pentium with 64 MB RAM I only have a 166mghz with 48 MB of RAM is that going to make any difference. Or am I alright as long as the program works. Your point about the RAM is well taken. This computer is very unique in that it contains EDO ram and SDR Ram. i think originally it had only 24 MB of edo Ram and then I added another 24MB of SDR Ram. There is space for another row of SDR Ram but would I need the EDO to equalize the amount of RAM . I need a new computer badly. but am trying to make do for the time being thanks again Larry

    Hi again Larry

A mix of EDO RAM and SDR is unique! Also, RAM comes in doublings of 8, as in 16, 32, 64, 128, etc. 24 and 48 don't sound right. To find out what's really in your system, you can download BELARC . It will give a read out of all your hardware and software. It is great for reference purposes. And feel free to ask any other questions you have!:)

Thanks for your help guys and girls. I finally got everything working but since installing IE6,Outlook express and Attonis. The computer has slowed to a crawl. I have been deleting temp files and history daily, but doesn't seem to help. Can I go back to IE5and Outlook Express 5 or is that feasible. Belarc reports 48MB,installed ram,and 1.75 gig harddrive, 575 meg of free space,166mghtz Intel pentium w/MMX. Your advice would be appreciated.thanks again, Larry

    Hello again Larry!

Sorry I didn't get your message right away but I have been busy.

Sorry also about the RAM size confusion. I'm betting you have 16MB + 32MB = 48MB - silly me!

But this still isn't enough. I cannot stress enough how important sufficient RAM is. There is NOTHING you can do to compensate for not enough RAM. Going back to older versions of IE won't help. It is Annotis that is stressing your system.

I'm also afraid that only 575MB of free disc space will cause your machine to suffer. A hard drive is not only a storage space but a work space. It needs room for the swap file, temporary files and other space in which to shuffle around data. You need to be absolutely miserly with disc space. Delete Temp files all the time. Go through your own files and delete what isn't absolutely necessary. If you can, save files to floppy discs.

As I mentioned before that Annotis requires a minimum of 266mhz. If you cannot upgrade your computer or get another, newer one, I suggest you not run more than one program at a time to cut down on the workload on the computer. We may also be able to save you some computing power by turning off things that don't need to be running. Can you please go to the following website and download StartupList. Run it and paste the results back here. We can then decide if there is anything we can trim back on.

    Take care for now :)

Hi again Larry. How are you?

I looked over your startup list and I don't see any real problems there. You seem to have a clean system, unless somebody sees something I missed.

It seems that Yahoo messenger and MSN messenger are running at startup. You should turn these off in options and run them only when you need them. They don't consume large amounts of resources but in your case every little bit saved helps.

As long as you run Annotis your system, as it stands, will run slow. I don't see any way around that.

Thanks for your help. I learned a lot. I guess I can live without Attonis. The one thing I wanted to know is can I still add more Ram or not. You were right about the 18 + 36. How much could I put in.??
    Thanks, Larry

    Hi again Larry:

Yes, if you can live with Annotis, it will remove a big demand from your system. Just ask yourself how necessary is a program and how much is it costing in resources. Sorry it didn;t work out.

To find out how much your RAM your computer can take, we need to know exactly what your computer is. To find out the particulars, go HERE, download Belarc Advisor and post the results back here. I'm sure you can get as much as 128MB of RAM into your computer, but that's just a guess until we can see details.
