I checked my inbox last night to find out that all my messages and personal folders had disappeared. I am on Windows 2000 Professional and using Outlook Express 6. I searched for any files with extension ".pst" but couldn't find it anywhere. I am not sure if outlook express stores the personal folder as ".pst" extensions or some other file extension. I would really like someone to help me retrieve my inbox with personal folders. One strange thing is that the "Deleted" and "sent" folders still contains all my messages. Is it possible that a new instance of outlook express got started for some reason and my original instance of outlook express is still somewhere saved on my computer? Please help.

Outlook Express keeps its stuff in dbx files. It's Outlook that uses .pst files.

To find out what location OE is currently using for its store folder, in OE go to Tools>Options>Maintenence and click on the "Store Folder" button. Then look around for other store folders in that same area (click on Browse). The default store folders are a pain because they use impossible-to-remember names with a long string of numbers and letters.

Keep changing the store folder until your missing messages appear....they should be in one of those folders with the idiotic letter/number name. ;)

Also, be sure that you haven't inadvertantly set a filter that is preventing you from seeing your mail -- making it appear that they have been deleted.

Thanks Miz and MsPCGenius for your help. I am so glad that with your help I was able to locate the missing inbox and personal folders. Now my question is how do I point back the OE to use my old Inbox rather then the one it is currently using which is inbox(1). I did not find a Browse button on clicking Store Folder button. However, it does have a change button, which points to the OE folder to which my local and personal folders are stored. If I go via explorer and delete inbox(1) in the hope that it would pick up inbox, it doesn't....instead creates another inbox(1). Please help.
