We have a few users whose Outlook intermittenly hangs upon startup (splash screen does appear.) We have already ruled out Exchange 2000 and the WAN as part of the problem. We have traces that show when Outlook hangs, the outlook client does not even attempt to communicate with a DC, GC or Exchange Server.

Using Outlook properties, if we "re-resolve" the username against the target exchange server, the client will be able to startup outlook successfully. Also subsequent attempts will finally yield success.

Starting Outlook with the /Safe switch also yields success. We are now testing to make sure this works consistenly. My question is, what does this tell us? I know that the safe mode prevents preview pane, add-ons and extensions from loading but if these machines aren't even communicating with the servers how do these features become part of the equation? Is there something else about safe mode that I'm not aware of? Please advise.
