I started getting this error last week when I tried to check my email. It had worked fine for over a year until Thurday.

Task 'mail.mchsi.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I called my ISP and they told me it was an Outlook problem and they don't support Outlook.

If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks.

I'd try a couple of things. First, make sure all your settings are as they should be; here is a helpful link on error 0x80042108.

Next, I'd ping my ISP mail server to make sure the server is connecting. It could be a temporary glich in your ISP mail server and the guysyou talked to didn't know.

    Thanks.

I followed the instructions on that page, my settings were the same as it showed, it's still not working.

How do I ping my ISP mail server?

With XP I open a DOS command window by going to Start > Run > type "command" without the quotes and a black dos window will open. Then just type "ping" again without the quotes, a space, and then the IP number of your mail server. Then hit enter.

    Thanks again.

I did that. This is what I got, can I do anything with it?

Pinging mail.mchsi.com [204.127.203.151] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 204.127.203.151: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL = 35
    Reply from 204.127.203.151: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL = 35
    Reply from 204.127.203.151: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL = 35
    Reply from 204.127.203.151: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL = 35

    Ping statistics for Reply from 204.127.203.151: bytes = 32 time = 35ms TTL = 35:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 <0% loss>,
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 36ms, Average = 35ms

Hmmmm. If your settings are correct, your mail server is responding {and it is}, then maybe your OE program itself is sick. I'm thinking you might want to try a OE repair, but let me look around for a moment. In the meantime, perhaps someone else will jump in with an idea.

I found a thread with several different ideas as to the cause, like firewalls, antivirus, settings, etc. I know not just what your problem is, but read through this thread and why not try some of the suggestions? Look Here

There is more and more suggesting a conflict with Outlook and other software. Here is an article about SiteFinder and your error.

Did you add or change any programs when this started? Do you use Norton antivirus?

There are a bevy of hits on this at Google too.

Thank you so much for all your help on this.

I tried everything on that first link you sent me, nothing worked.

Someone did install Kazaa on my computer the day before all my trouble started. I ran Ad-Aware and that seems to have broken Kazaa, so I didn't worry about uninstalling it. Now when I go to Add/Remove Programs and try to remove it, I get an error message:

    Error Loading C:\WINNT\System32\cd_clint.dll

Other than that, I haven't added or changed anything.

You know Wakkoxc.....You seem to have several things going on. Maybe there are some baddies lurking in your machine. The experts on this forum are able to fix many things by reviewing a HijackThis log. Unfortunately, I'm still in the learning stages on HJT logs, but there are people that can and will help.

I would suggest that you do this. Go to HijackThis download site and download HijackThis. Un Zip it and click on the HijackThis.exe. Then click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log. Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply or a new thread in the Security or this forum

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix. The log may very well reveal the source of the problem.

Like I said before, I'm not a HJT expert, but from what I can tell, your log looks clean. There is nothing suspicious that I can see.

I'm not sure what to tell you next.

    E-Mail Scanning
I have seen this particular error before in my line of work. The fix is usually disableing the E-mail Scanning in your Anti-Virus Program. By Default Norton Internet Security/Anti-Virus Automatically sets it up to scan your e-mails to protect you while you use Outlook, Outlook Express or any other Mail client. Try Disabling the E-mail scanning...and see if that works. *Note* I did not say to disable everything just the e-mail scanning.
