I downloaded and use Firebox and Thunderbird because I read that Internet
explorer contains some possible security problems.

My question is : could somebody exploit those as long as Internet Explorer
is installed on my computer even tough it is not the default.

Or is it preferable ( safer ) to remove the Internet explorer ?

Same question for Thunderbird.

Thanks

I wouldn't remove them. I know that there is a lot of paranoia about exploits and stuff these days, but as long as you practice safe computing (don't open emails from people you don't know, don't open attachments without saving them and then checking them with an antivirus program) you should be comparatively safe. It is impossible to be 100% safe. You could get run over crossing the street. :)
