Three days ago, the page that comes up on explorer when you reach a site that cannot be displayed, started coming up whenever I turn on my computer wheather or not I'm on-line.

The page says at the top "reminder" with the correct day and date each day. The rest of it says "This page cannot be displayed" And goes on to say that the link I'm looking for is currently unavailable.... The same one that comes up when your searching for something that is no longer there.

The only problem is that there is no way to make it go away. Nothing to click on, period. No X, no - , no anything. And it stays there until I turn off the computer.

Any help you can offer would be greatly apprecieated.

    Thank you very much,
    hrhsherry

It doesn't solve the "real" problem but there are 2 other ways to close a web page.

Hold down Ctrl and press the W key. or
Press Ctrl Alt Delete and highlight the page in question and click end task.

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Or you can search for any dialup file trojans by typing in dial.exe and delete (in safemode if can't in windows).

    then
    download AdAware 6 181
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and tick "Automaticly try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

    then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

Run an online antivirus check from at least one of the following sites
    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

hrhsherry writes on 9-30-03 about page that comes up which has on the top bar "Reminder: with the correct day and day." The page has a heading "This page cannot be displayed". There is no 'X' in the upper right hand corner and the page cannot be resized. I have the same problem, which occurred about the same time as that of hrhsherry. I know I can make it go away by going to the Taskmanager (Windows XP) and ending the task. But, the screen pops up again over and over.

Triple6 asked hrhsherry to get Hijackthis and to post the startup log on the forum. dvk01 (derek) said the same thing and later looked at the startup log on this forum.

So, this is a note to dvk01 -- if I post the startup log on the forum can you look at mine, too??

And to dvk01, I've already dowloaded AdAware 6.181 and I have Norton Anti-Virus 8.00 on my system already. I'll be downloading
    Spybot later today.

dvk01, let me know if you can help.

yes just run hijackthis, save the log and post it into a thread of your own, DO NOT ADD TO THIS THREAD, it would be preferable to post it into the security forum and someone will examine it and advise on ghow to cure the problem
