Paid for Adware; is it worth $27.00

I recently purchased a refurbished Dell GX620 computer that came preloaded with XP Pro. Every time I boot up the machine I get a balloon in the lower right corner of the screen that says I have a security issue that needs to be addressed. When I click on the balloon, I get a Microsoft Screen that says my firewall is on, automatic updates is on but I don't have any virus protection. I read in PC World magazine that a malware, virus, etc. program was the best freeware the magazine's writers had tested out of many similar programs offered. I downloaded the program, installed it and even paid the $27.00 they wanted for the professional version.

Now that I've done that, I still get a "No Virus Protection" notice when I boot up. I went into the Microsoft security screen that still comes up and clicked on the MS recommendation link. The next page advised that the MS virus protection program for free was all I ever needed to protect my computer from viruses, etc. it also advised that if I had any other virus or malware programs installed that they should be removed because if not they could cause big trouble in computer operations. Did I buy a pig-in-a-poke when I bought the AdWare? Adware says it doesn't catch all viruses and if I new that before I bought it I never would have installed it. Any help or comments about this question will be greatly appreciated.

Most definitely a rogue and rip off program. Can you get your money back? :)

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

There it is: Adware Professional v5.0

It's definitely a rogue program.

Uninstall Adware Professional v5.0 from Add or Remove Programs.

We will get you cleaned up and make sure to get you some real protection programs. :)

There are free anti-virus programs available. I use AVG: http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage
Your Java is also outdated. We will work on that too. It's a crucial patch you need to apply.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 20 -"
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6u20 with JavaFX 1 License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

To test your Java Run-time, you may go to this page http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
When all is well, you should see Java Version: 1.6.0_20 from Sun Microsystems Inc.

Let's also do this:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

In response to Cheeseball81: OK, I've uninstalled my $27.00 mistake and will soon start the Java procedures. But one other thing has come up that might be easy to fix. A few days ago I downloaded the new Microsoft 2010 Office beta program on the advice of my son who has had the program on his computer for close to a year. I get "Word", "Excel", another service I can't remember at this time and last but not least, "Outlook 2010" that has my internet email tied up. Some outfit wants me to pay for a subscription that will change my online email. I don't want anything with that changed but now if I try to save something like your latest advice that came to me as email, this Outlook 2010 screen comes up and if I start to follow it through it wants me to select either my present Outlook (version 6? I guess) to this new 2010. When I refuse to do this, it tells me I will no longer be able to receive online emails unless I change to the new system. When I installed this program, all I really wanted was "Word". Did I make yet another mistake?

In response to Flavallee: I got the message and uninstalled the MS 2010 Offfice Works. Now I can again use Outlook 6 as may mail client. Thank you for the "Yep"

In Response to Cheeseball 81: I uninstalled the paid for Adware program and then downloaded what I thought was the AVG you recommended. That turned out to be a registry cleaning program that says I have 949 errors on the computer and it removed 100 of the problems and if I paid a sum of money (I didn't even go far enough to see what that cost would be), it would remover the 849 errors. I just removed that from my computer. Twenty seven dollars is enough waste . Should I just load up the anti-virus program that MS provides with XP Pro or go looking for some pricey progam like Nortan or Mcafee?

Oh umm, what did you click on? There is a button that says Download AVG Free
That takes you here: http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free
Then scroll down to the bottom and you will see Free* download
Then you will see a Cnet.com Download in green, that takes you here: http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-V...l-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801
Then click on Download Now (a pop up should come up in IE at the very top)
I see what you clicked on, there is an "Advanced Registry Optimizer" download on the same page. You clicked on the wrong thing.

Cheeseball81: I finally got AVG to download and install and I ran the first total computer scan showing not problems. But now another problem has occured. Right after boot up I can click on one of any sites on my desktop (like this one) and use that one site till finished. However, when I go back to the desktop and try to click on any other icon, nothing happens. Something now has tied up the computer and I'm catching hell from my wife because she now cannot get her mail on AOL.com. Is there something in the AVG virus program that needs to be adjusted to stop this problem?

If AVG is giving you that much trouble, I'd go ahead and uninstall it. See if that makes a difference as far as performance goes.

If it improves once AVG is gone, you really should get some type of protection. Avast is another free one and will perhaps give you less trouble than AVG: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

We can also turn off some of the unnecessary programs that are running at Startup to boost speed of the system too.

Let me know what you want to do. :)

My sister's computer did not play nice with AVG since the lastest version release of it. I installed Avira (another free one) on hers and it has been fine. The only thing with Avira is, when it updates, a large notice for the "paid for" version of Avira comes up. You click on the "okay" or the x button and it goes away. Only does it when it updates the virus definitions, but it will do that each time. On the plus side, it is supposed to be one of the best antivirus pograms out there now.

You've got a lot of programs that are auto-loading and running in the background that don't need to be doing so.

That's going to impede overall performance and increase the risk of conflicts and error messages and freezes.
