It might be Laptop specific and it might be limited to Vista onwards. However Windows provides Power Management options, allowing you to set your computer to (the defaults--it is possible to create your own schemes) power saver, balanced, and high performance. When you're plugged in and using your computer to play complex games, you'd set it to high performance. When you're mobile and just using your computer to take notes, you set it to power saver so that your battery doesn't run dry so fast.

Basically the options control how bright the screen goes, how long the computer takes to turn of the monitor or go to sleep, how quickly the computer shuts down the hard disk in periods of inactivity, and a bunch of other things that use up energy. Among them is the processor. Running a given program in power saver mode used up 80% or up of my CPU (and it didn't run very well), running the same process in high performance used up less than 20%.

Thanks for the insight Ent. The dynamics of the computer trade are truly fascinating. :)

Before you start HiJackThis and run a scan to submit a log here, make sure to close all open windows first - including browser windows. This prevents cluttering up your log with unnecessary entries.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

I highly recommend that you get rid of Tuneup Utilities 2010 and any other programs that you're using to clean/boost/optimize/tuneup your computer, especially the ones that allow access to the registry. They do little to nothing to improve speed or performance. What they can do is break certain programs and damage the operating system.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Except for Avira AntiVir, practically all of the other startup entries can be unchecked and prevented from auto-loading and running in the background.

Most of the services in your log can also be set on Manual instead of on Automatic.

Power Management Options have been available since XP and are applicable to both Desktops and Laptops.

With Desktops, the Power Management is concerned primarily with the time duration that components are switched ON and therefore consuming power. For example; how long after the computer becomes "inactive" does the monitor, disk drives or the computer itself go into Standby Mode and therefore reduced power consumption. Power Management does not (certainly should not) therefore affect "performance" because the difference in consumption of mains electricity between High Performance settings and Low Performance settings would be immeasureably small and therefore totally insignificant.

With Laptops, when not plugged into the mains supply and therefore running on battery power alone, the requirements are quite different. Performance settings make a very big difference to the length of time that a battery can deliver power and therefore the priority and primary concern is with conserving battery power so as to provide sufficient power to perform basic computing operations for the maximum time before requiring recharging.

sorry about the first one, i have disabled the registry-accessing aspect of tuneup utilities and have prevented it from running automatically so I do not need to worry about it. I think I have disabled everything that I can from startup and set unnecessary/unused services to manual startup, if you look through what the startup programs are I think they are generally essential things such as my laptop mouse driver. I know a reasonable amount about all this and have looked into all these things but I appreciate the input and effort. keep it coming.

    In response to Ent:
thanks, I had not thought of that and will look into it.

Avira AntiVir and Synaptics are the only 2 startup entries that I see in your log that need to auto-load and run, but it's your choice if you want other startup entries to do the same.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Go into these 2 temp folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

    C:\Documents And Settings(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

and delete the contents of these temp folders. It's all junk and it's a good place for nasties to hide. If a few files resist deletion, leave them alone and delete everything else. After that's done, restart your computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Download and save these 2 programs:

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46

    SUPERAntiSpyware 4.41.0.1000

Close all open windows first, then install them.

After that's done, restart your computer.

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections are found during the scan, the number of infections will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that everything is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

    Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

    Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Click "Scan your Computer - Perform Quick Scan - Next".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "OK".

Make sure that everything in the list is selected, then click "Next".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

    Click "Preferences - Statistics/Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.
