This is my first posting to tech guys and I hope I'm in the right category. Here goes. I have a dell 8200 1.8gig with 256 ram that is running painfully slow for the time I start it up. It take minutes to transfer from page to page. (not only when i'm on the INTERNET, but when I'm moving around in the computer)

I'm running Norton anti virus 2003. my hard drive has 18 GB free and memory has 874MB free.

I also have kazaa downloaded with about 1200 songs...is this a problem.

I installed and run spy bot . Is this good software?

One question regaurding spy bot. after I run search and destroy how do I save the cookies that will allow me to keep my user name and password for sites like yours?

    I would appreciate and advise.

    Thank you

Kazaa is loaded with spyware which will slow your computer down. You need to post a HiJack This log in Security. Download It and post your log their. Here is the link...http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

Do you have a cd burner? All those mp3 files on your hd will definately slow you down. I ended up installing a burner for that reason- my computers so much faster now...Anyways, if you dont have a burner,I would send all your music to another folder and uninstall kazaa, and get 'Ares'. Its alot smaller than kazaa but it has the same face, and downloads faster. No Spyware, No advertisements- You wouldnt believe the difference once kazaas gone. Check it out www.softgap.com
Have you deleted all your temporary internet files? Defgagmented, and ran scandisk?

No do not uninstall Spybot, keep both Spybot and Ad-Aware and run them a couple times a week. You will have to get rid of Kazaa to get your computer to run the way it was designed to. One of the reasons your computer is so slow is that you are sharing files and have Brilliant and BDE which come with Kazaa using your hard drive. Your computer is full of bad things! Someone will be helping you with it.

Run both Spybot and Ad-Aware and post a new HiJack This log in the Security section of this forum.

how can you have more memory free than your system memory?

You have a LOT of stuff opened. Of course your machine is slow. You need to go to MSCONFIG and disable all the UNNECESSARY programs from the STARTUP tab (RealPlayer, QuickTime, AOL, AIM, MSN Messenger is UNNECESSARY at boot up). Clean those up and you should see some increased performance. Also run the programs listed in my signature (the bottom part of this message) to ensure you do not have any nasties. Oh, uninstall Kazaa, it has spyware. Make sure you save your downloads in another directory or it will delete them. Use Kazaa-Lite instead (hacked version of Kazaa, just has no spyware or ads)

Also make sure Microsoft Works is not loaded up on startup or that will slow you down more.

Nobody asked this question yet..... Do you have Kazaa on all the time (refer to the taskbar to see if its on) If it is, and your sharing 1000+ files, just the Kazaa program itself will be enough to slow your PC down big time.... especially if your sharing those files, and people are uploading and your downloading too.

I've noted in the past that even with sharing disabled in Kazzaa... just having it on, when you have 1000+ files in your share folder is enough to eat big time CPU time.

Hit Control ALT Del, select task manager and report back what CPU % is being used by Kazaa.... When I had 3000+ shares on my 2.0 PIV, w/ 512mg Ram it would eat up more than 60% of my CPU time just being on....
