Below is my Hijack this log. I tried to run a full Norton scan tonight but it was scanning only one file every second or so. All applications are painfully slow, opening, scrolling, toggling between programs. I did my weekly full system scan on Friday and re-downloaded live updates on Saturday because things seemed a little slow. The scan on Friday found a trojan horse but seemed to quarantine it. I have Windows Live Updates turned on - Bill Gates has full access! Now everything has practically ground to a halt. I saved a system restore last year. I'm wondering if I should just do that, but I've never done it and don't know the implications. Thanks.

The Hijack This log is hard to read.
    Please rescan with Hijack This.
When the log opens in Notepad, go to Format and select Wordwrap.
Then copy and paste the log here.

Hope this is better. I was able to run a full scan last night. It didn't find anything. Seemed to speed up a little but not much. Thanks!

Looks clean. How much RAM do you have?

Doggone it, CheeseBall. You beat me to it again. I was going to ask how fast is the processor and how much RAM is installed.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary11, there are too many programs running in the background that don't need to. That in itself can impede overall performance. We need to get the startup list trimmed down. Let me know when you're ready and I'll assist you.

    It's a circa 1999/2000 Sony Pentium 4 1.49 Ghz w/ 512 MB ram. It's been a good little computer. Like a little old workhorse.

I suspected as much about the garbage factor.

Speaking of "garbage", delete all files and folders from inside the following TEMP folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(USERNAME)\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP

Do not delete the TEMP folders, just their contents.

(Note: If this hasn't been done in a long time, don't be surprised if there are hundreds of them)

There were only a few hundred in my user directory. Not many more anywhere else. A handful couldn't be deleted, but they were dated today. There is a NAV directory in my user temp folder that has a lot in it - Norton? About 20 subdirectories. Should this go too?

I don't use Symantec Norton, so I don't know what kind of directories it creates and what's safe to delete.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as the other temp files that wouldn't delete, restart your computer and then try again. If that still doesn't work, just wait until tomorrow or another day. Just try to get in the habit of doing it at least once a week.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm leaving for a computer club meeting in about an hour, so I'll be back on-line either later tonight or early tomorrow morning.

If anyone is still out there, I turned some programs off in startup - just a few that I know I don't want. There are probably many more that I don't need. I got a message saying I needed change back to the default so I enabled all of them again. I noticed an improvement in speed but I don't think I'm going about this the right way. Here's the latest log. Hope I got the word wrap right. Thanks!
