Exploit.CHMThreat Level:
Damage:
Distribution:

Common name: Exploit.CHM

Technical name: Exploit/MIE.CHM

Threat level: Low

Type: Security Risk

Effects: It uses an Internet Explorer vulnerability to download and run files on the affected computer.

Affected platforms: Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT/ME/98/95

Detection updated on: Feb. 27, 2004

In circulation? No

Brief Description

Exploit.CHM is a vulnerability exploit. It is not categorized as a virus, worm or Trojan. To be more precise, it is a malicious code that could be hosted in a web page in order to exploit a vulnerability in the browser Internet Explorer. Affected versions are: 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 with Service Pack 1.

If an HTML file (for example, a web page) loads a file with a CHM (Compiled HTML) extension using a concrete sequence, the CHM file would be copied to the hard drive of the affected computer, and the script code it contained (as part of the HTML file) would be run. This allows to run arbitrary code on the affected computer, without user's intervention, just by accessing a malicious web page.

This exploit is being used in order to download and run Trojans and other malware on affected computers.

Currently, there is no security patch available for this vulnerability.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Download Cleanup from Here
  • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
  • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
  • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
  • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
  • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
  • Click OK
  • DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Run Cleanup:
  • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
  • Once it’s done, close the program.

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

Run the Panda scan again and follow the prompt to allow it to delete the .chm exploit vulnerability.

This is from their site:

If Panda Antivirus or Panda ActiveScan detects Exploit.CHM during the scan, it will automatically offer you the option of deleting it. Do this by following the program's instructions.

Let us know how that goes.

All it found were cookies so it looks like it deleted the .chm exploit since it's not detecting it any more.

How's everything running?

Should I purchase Panda Platnium Security?

Or do you recommend a different product?

Or am I better off running all these free programs, i.e. Ewido, HiJack THis, Panda free online scan, etc...

I think you're find with AVG. You definitely can't have two anti-virus programs as they will conflict with each other.

You can keep Ewido. After the trial period, if you decide not to purchase the extended version, you can keep the free version.

Also, add Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy to the mix along with a third party firewall such as Zone Alarm.

turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

Delete your temporary files:

In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit - Select All then Edit - Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start - Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit - Select All then hit Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel - Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the recycle bin.

I guess I was wondering (and hoping) that if I bout Panda Platinum it would eliminate having to run all these seperate programs...just have one that does it all...

IS this the case or is Panda Platinum not as good?
