I have Windows XP home edition, and I use Google to search automatically from my address bar. Somehow last night, I or my boyfriend received a parasite that redirects any search to a site with this address: (searched term :help:)

http://auto.search.msn.com/response.asp?MT=help&srch=5&prov=gogl&utf8

When you look at Google's cached page of auto.search.msn.com, its OBVIOUSLY not their site. I have tried restoring to earlier dates, I have tried to look for it in the registry... but unsure of what I am looking for. I have restored all my defaults, only to continue having the problem.

I am very frustrated....

If I need to tell you anything more, please let me know...

Hope someone out there can help.

Carey

then do this
download AdAware 6 181
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and tick "Automaticly try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroCheck] C:\WINDOWS\System32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background (this may need to be turned off in the Messenger program itself)

Those don't need to run at startup.

Info on this one:

O4 - Global Startup: Exif Launcher.lnk = C:\Program Files\Exif Launcher\QuickDCF.exe

Quickdcf QuickDCF.exe

(??) Exif Launcher System Tray application. EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. It is the de-facto standard for modern digital cameras for the storage and interchange of image files using JPEG compression. As of December 2002 all new digital cameras now use the EXIF format. The EXIF format is part of the DCF standard (Digital Content Format) created to standardise interoperability between imaging devices. The Exif Launcher, also sometimes called the FinePix Viewer, sits in the System Tray and enables you to transfer images between your digital camera and your PC. This application is used mainly by Fuji’s FinePix line of digital cameras.

Recommendation :
Down to user preference. If you take a lot of pictures then it is convenient to be able to start the application from the System Tray, otherwise you may want to keep your System Tray to the bare minimum, and so disable QUICKDCF with Startup Manager and always start it via "Start \ Programs".

Info on this one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] soundman.exe

Soundman Soundman.exe

(Realtek Avance Logic Inc) Sound Manager System Tray utility installed by the drivers for Realtek Avance Logic based soundcards, mainly onboard soundcards, which enables the user to control the S/PDIF input and output (Sony/Philips Digital Interface – a standard which allows the transfer of an audio file from one medium to another without first converting to and from analogue format with the resulting loss of audio quality that that entails). SOUNDMAN also allows you to change the function of the input and output ports of your soundcard from Line-In, Line-Out, and MIC to Front, Rear, and Centre speakers.

Recommendation :
Most users do not use any of the features of SOUNDMAN. If that is your case then disable SOUNDMAN in Starter.

Also, do you use the calendar works reminder?
