I have purchased an external HD. I am using windows vista x64. I want a folder to be password protected even when plugged into other systems, even if they are running xp. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about password protected files--they would be easily seen with recovery software I think. If you want to really protect them anywhere, anytime, encryption is the way to go and TrueCrypt would serve that purpose.

If its just to prevent the casual prying eye from gaining access though you could create an archive of the folder and password protect that. Maybe someone knows of a program that doesn't require that extra step though...
