    Hi folks, I’ve been browsing through the forum to find an answer to a problem but thought I’d start a thread to maybe get a discussion going.

    Basically the problem is my PC keeps restarting itself automatically and it’s becoming very annoying. This happens approx 2-3 times an evening and appears to be totally random.

    I’m not sure exactly what to post so I’ll start with some basics and you can let me know what else you need.

    Compaq Presario running Windows XP
    Use a Netgear wireless router for my broadband
    Use Microsoft Office 2003 (recently added Spamfighter)
    Running Norton Anti-virus and firewall
    Use Mozilla Firefox as browser
    Don’t really have a great deal extra on the machine apart from iTunes, Google Earth and my Fuji digital camera.

    Any advice on how I can pinpoint the cause of the restarting? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Andrew

    you need to stop the auto restart

    goto
    control panel>
    system>
    advanced tab>
    startup and recovery - settings>
    under the title - system failure
    untick - automatically restart

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299

    now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
    post the info on the screen
    it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver

    Thanks for replying and sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I followed the instruction above and the following was the message on the blue screen:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Then there was a bit of text about the error and the following codes:

    * * * STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x870E23C8, 0x000000002, 0x00000000, 0xB69ECA6E)

    * * * SymIDSC0.sys – Address B69ECA6E base at B69C9000, DateStamp 45a819df

    Hope you can help!

    No, but I do have an Epson Stylus Photo R245.

    Now that you come to mention it though there could be a connection. I only plugged the printer back in in the last month or so and that's roughly how long it's been restarting in.

    etaf, thanks for the help. I've uninstalled the printer drivers but have yet to reinstall them. I thought i'd see if the pc continued to auto-restart and it has.

    Blue screen details tonight are:

    * * * STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xB9DE09C8, 0xB9DE06C4, 0xE72Do5B7)

    * * * Ntfs.sys – Address F72D05B7 base at F7299000, Datestamp 41107eea

    And after restarting it I got another blue screen error that said:

    PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (followed by lots of 0x0000000 etc)

    Any thoughts?

    Folks, anyone else got any ideas? PC still auto-restarting and got this error again on the blue screen:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Tech details are:

    0x0003AA76 (0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF5984914)

    USBPORT SYS - Address F5984914 base at F597A000, Datestamp 41107d62

    (just a thought but does it cause problems if you leave a USB cable in the port with nothing attached at the other end??)

    Cheers

    :confused:

    If you have 2 sticks of Ram in the PC take one out and see for a while then swop it for the other one.

    Or you can do a memory test here

    Couldn't seem to download the memory test but i think i may (and i stress may!) have found the root of the problem.

    I was getting a lot of those 'stock alert' spam emails so i recently installed SPAMfighter ( http://www.spamfighter.com/ ). It was only moderately successful in blocking the spam so i just uninstalled it yesterday and have had no auto restarts since then.

    Just a coincidence or the possible cause?

    I would unplug the USB from the PC if not in use.

    Test Your Memory

    Download Memtest zip for floppy to your Desktop

    • Put a floppy in the floppy drive
    • Go My Computer and right click the Floppy drive
    • Choose Format......
    • Choose Create an MS-DOS startup disk
    • Let it finish

    • Then Right click on the Memtest zip file and choose Extract All
    • Open the folder and Double click Install.Bat
    • In the new window type A:/ click Enter
    • Let it finish

    With the floppy in the drive Restart the PC.

    If it does not work you may have to change the Boot order
    in Bios to make Removable drives first (Legacy floppy)

    With the order changed put the disk in the floppy and restart the PC

    Let it run for at least a couple passes
