    Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio with 80GB hard disk drive which I have been using for about 2 years. There is a lot of software installed but I figure there is enough capacity (4.04GB free on c: and 34.7GB free on d:. Recently my machine has started to get slower and slower, generally after trying to do anything with the DVD writer/player. I have tried all sorts of fixes, I have been using free AVG but am currently using the trial AVG 7.5 (this seems to slow things a lot). I have spybot, adaware and I have RegscrubXP (which I'm not entirely comfortable about). I have tried running them all in safe mode and with system restore turned off but the machine is just getting slower and slower. My HJT log file looks as follows, I only ever deleted one thing from it but I can't remember what it was. Please help..

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

This should've been posted in the "Windows NT/2000/XP" section and not in the "All Other Software" section.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your HijackThis log is showing some problems and questionable entries that a log expert will need to help you with.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RegScrubXP is a very old and outdated registry cleaner utility that came out soon after Windows XP was released over 5-1/2 years ago. A much better and safer utility to use is ToniArts EasyCleaner 2.0.6.380 - as long as you use only the "Unnecessary" and "Registry" sections.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several programs running in the background that don't need to be.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you haven't done it in awhile or done it at all, delete everything from inside these TEMP folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\(USERNAME)\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP

Hi, We have a utility that can show us items from the Event Viewer logs, not all items but the important ones and this may give us a clue as to what is going on:

    WINPFind3U
Download WinPFind3U.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.
    • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.
    • In the Processes group click ALL
    • In the Win32 Services group click ALL
    • In the Driver Services group click ALL
    • In the Registry group click ALL
    • In the Files Created Within group click 60 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days Make sure Non-Microsoft only is UNCHECKED
    • In the File String Search group select ALL

    • in the Additional scans sections please press select ALL
    • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
    • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
    • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
    • Save that notepad file but click on the "Format" menu and make sure that "word wrap" is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Upload the report as an attachment please.
I will review the information when it comes back in. That may not be tonite, I'll be leaving soon, back tomorrow evening.

Hi, I'd suggest you also do what is below, so we can see what may be on the system that needs to dealt with:

    Kaspersky online full scan
    • Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
    • Read and Accept the Agreement
    • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
    • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
    • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
    • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
    • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
    • Copy and Paste the contents of the on line scanner results into a Reply here in your thread, along with a new HJT log and log from any other scans you run.

Hi, Please post this log, made with Hijackthis>

Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad. Copy and paste that list here.

Hi, I'm sorry but I cannot come up with anything that would seem to be causing problems!

If AVG caused the initial slowdown, was there another antivirus program installed before AVG, post what you had.... if you uninstalled that older antivirus, did the uninstall seem to work correctly?

Thanks for your help. The machine came with Norton and (after a while) I reckon I removed it all, there were some issues but I think its all gone now. I think the problem maybe to do with Cyberlink that I use for downloading my camcorder, it doesn't work well at all, or maybe its the DVD burner, the camcorder is JVC and this machine is Sony (could there be a compatibility problem). Problems seem to get worse when I try to use the DVD player.

The other thought I had is that I have too much included in start up, and probably stuff that I don't want anymore. I deleted a lot of things with add/remove, like a cordless keyboard I had and a USB skype phone.

The machine works ok (sort of) once its up and running but start up is so slow. The windows start up tune is all broken up and crackly, it seems like its running in some sort of loops for a while whilst starting up.

I'm pretty sure theres no virus or malware that I can't get rid of, I think all the tests we ran confirmed that. It just seems like I've got the set up messed up with all the stuff thats on the machine (or was on the machine).

Is there a way to clear everything off the machine and revert to its original state when I bought it? Would appreciate any advise.

Hi, You posted that you did use the free version of AVG but switched to a trial of 7.5...the 7.5 has a free edition here:

    http://www.free.grisoft.com/

Use the "free basic protection" link for AVG Antivirus, I use it and many others do....

Might be less protection yes, no firewall etc....which may the problem anyway.

Might the trial period have expired? Sorry if I already asked or you posted that...

It's easy enough to get the computer back to factory settintgs, usually, if you have the right materials...either a set or one disk like System Recovery, whatever it may be called...
made by the computer manufacturer, um Sony...came as part of the original purchase.

There may not be any disk, you may have the type of system that you can make your own, by using a software utility that came pre-installed, along with a DVD burner, if your computer has one of those, and sounds like it does....in this case, there should be a hidden partition that the full system Recovery is done from, usually by hitting a certain key or keys during startup.

(Compaq users sometimes call this "F-10" ing , or they use other F type words.....:) )
