    Hi All,

    This is my first post.

My PC sometimes freezes. This can be on boot up or when Windows XP has loaded. However, when the PC runs it is absolutley fine.

Someone said it may be that too many things are running on startup. I once found a web site that gave you information on what is safe and needed at startup but I cannot seem to find it now.

Any help will be most welcome.

    Best wishes
    Graeme

    Welcome to the Forums!

Can you give us a bit more information on your system so we can get a better idea of what we're dealing with?

Well where to begin as freezes first and foremost may be spyware or virus so you should start by doing online scans from these two guys to check that idea out and/or rule it out:
    www.ewido.net
    www.bitdefender.com
    Then go:
Run,msconfig,ok,startup and tell us what is checked there.....
Let's also download and iknstall this to tell us your cpu and motherboard temps as well as fan speeds to check to see if heat is a problem.

    Hello Rich and All,

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm running ewido as I type so hopefully that might give me some help.

My startup items at present are:-

    Opware32
    E_S4I0S2
    avgcc
    BT Yahoo! Help

    Many thanks

    Hi,

    Thanks for your help.

I checked out the site you advised and it says

    e_s4i0s2.exe file information
The process EPSON Status Monitor belongs to the software EPSON Status Monitor by SEIKO EPSON CORPORATION (www.epson.com).

    Is this OK?

    Best wishes

Leave Avg and uncheck the others and reboot (after eWido scan is done)

    Best wishes

OK leave dragdig as it is for dsl modem....opware has something to do with scanning software so uncheck. printer will work and there is no reason for status monitor in startup to do so...remember whatever you uncheck, you can always go back and recheck if something does not function.

    Hi All,

Boy o Boy! I just don't get it. I've tried everything you kind people have told me. It worked well then today I booted up and sometimes it stalled after the RAM count, other times at the first Windows screen, then sometimes just as the desktop loaded, then sometimes re-booted itself.

Sorry to be a pest, it's just that I'm really bugged now.

    Many thanks

    Best wishes

OK Let's not panic yet as there is the hardware side to look at next. Any new hardware added to this pc? Download and install this memtest86 utility and test the ram (it will install to a floppy disk you then boot up to).
    http://www.memtest.org/
Go most of the way to bottom and download this:
    ** Memtest86+ V1.65 (10/01/2005) ** for floppy
This could also be power supply so we need to find out what wattage yours has and who makes it. Only way I know is remove side of pc and up top where power plug plugs in back is power supply and usually all that is on plate facing you.
