pc keeps turning off.

    at times my pc just randomly powers off. it comes and goes. its just really annoying and im tyring to figure the reason why. I have a Gateway Profile 5.5. Only thing I have upgraded is ram from 256 mb to 2 gb. thanks in advance.

    has it only been doing this since the 2GB memory upgrade

    try running memtest http://www.memtest.org/

    is the PC - getting hot at all - it may need all the fans blown out etc

    yeah it was the fan. i cleaned it all out. and it hasnt done it since.

    i guess that wasn't it, because a couple days ago it started shutting off again. its just really annoying when trying to complete tasks. any ideas?

    plus check all the drivers and update

    how old is the PC ?

    check the seating of the memory and all the cards and cables are seated correctly

    Sounds like a faulty hard drive. Lets see if we can agitate it. Copy the contents of your documents (hopefully you have a good amount) into another folder and see if it happens again.

    It may also prove helpful to scan for viruses/malware/spyware. Download the free version of AVG (google it)

    okay ill check this stuff out after work tonight and see what i come up with. thanks alot.

    capacitors seem fine. memory cards and cords are in place. and when i try to run memtest it stops at 54 percent every time.

    i did move the documents like you said also. maybe that will work.

    Switch the ram sticks positions. See if the memtest goes further, or stops earlier.
