    Hi, I hope somebody could advise.

    Recently my sisters PC has started to really lag (within a matter of days). It is only 1-2 years old, not the highest spec but enough for what she uses it for. Running Windows 7, AMD 3.4GHz processor, 4GB ram etc.

    Basically opening any programs such as Firefox, Skype etc all take a very long time to load and the general performance is sluggish, animations stutter when opening/closing etc. I noticed under the Resource Monitor within a few minutes of use the system ram usage would go very high ie 95% used despite only one or two programs being open.

    Default Boot.jpg

    Her son who also uses it downloads a lot of pc computer games and I thought perhaps it had caught a virus from something related to that but the scanner comes back as clean. I also ran Kaspersky Tdsskiller which also came back clean.

    I then preformed a Clean Boot so only the default essentials ran and it seemed to be ok during which I opened the same programs etc, this time only around 20% of the ram was being used.

    Clean Boot.jpg

    There does not appear to be any particularly large programs appearing under Task Manager which could be causing this.

    I am unsure how to proceed at this time and any advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Craig

    Try disabling Avast temporarily, and see how the system performs during that period.

    On a side note...
    Does that mean the games he's downloading are perhaps illegal copies from Torrent sites? If so, I'd advise you to warn your sister before she gets caught out by her ISP and, possibly, the copyright owners.

    Thanks for the advise, After switching off Avast it seems to have had little effect, If I watch the Resource Monitor I can see the free ram decreasing by the second despite the little use. I have not been a Windows user for a few years so I am not sure if this is typical behaviour?

    With it re-enabled it shows 1055mb hardware reserved, 1182mb in use, 63mb modified, 1537mb standby, 269mb free.

    Sorry I did not make that very clear, He is into Minecraft and small 3rd party games which I believe has modding options which has their own set of separate files to load into the game and I wondered if something could have been picked up from that? So nothing like torrents etc

    I have since ran Autoruns and noticed an odd program called Gameo, A quick google seems to suggest that this could be adware. I have uninstalled it and it seems to be responding a bit better.

    While the computer is in use the free ram seems to still be going down but instead of going into the in use section as before it is now going into the standby section. Is this how it should be?

    Edit: Here is the info from the SysInfo program:

    Watching the Resource Monitor can be helpful as long as you bear in mind that when we think the system is idle - it may be any number of programs/applications, that needs access to the system.
    ======
    Post the logfile from Security Check by screen317 - post # 4.
    ======
    Download AdwCleaner by Xplode to your desktop.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
    Click on the Download Now @bleepingcomputer button and save it to your desktop.

    NOTE: If using Internet Explorer and you get an alert that stops the program downloading click on Smartscreen Filter > Turn off Smartscreen Filter then click on OK in the box that opens. Then click on the link again.

    Close any browser that may be open - double click on the ADWCleaner icon on your desktop
    Click on the Scan button.
    Let it scan your Pc - when that is done click on the Logfile button - not Cleaning.
    The report will appear on your desktop - Copy and Paste it into your next post

    Load the Windows Task Manager.
    Select the "Processes" and "Performance" tabs.
    Submit an image of the lower left section of each window.

    Besides the fact that computer is running the most system-hungry version of Windows 7 there is, it's running the 32-bit version, so it's limited to using only 4 GB of RAM.
    Its MSI motherboard supports up to 16 GB of RAM, so running a 64-bit version would allow you to add another 4 GB or max it out.

    Its AMD dual-core processor has an average benchmark score of only 2009, so it's not going to provide the speed and "snappiness" that you want.
    Its AMD graphics also uses a part of the computer's RAM.

    That computer appears to have 3 GB of RAM.
    Is that correct?

    Thanks for all the help guys.

    @blues_harp28 I am currently running MalwareBytes right now and will post the results when its done.

    @flavallee Will do, Just waiting on the above program to finish. Yeah it was just a simple pre-assembled box she bought. It is only really used for web browsing, emails etc and a little light gaming such as Minecraft. It handled all of these things not to badly till recently so I am hoping it is something that has been installed that is causing the issues.

    @blues_harp28 It found a ridiculous 1100 problems, which it fixed. Here is the log. I had to post it as a .txt file attachment as it is to long for the post.

    @flavallee Here is the two photos showing the processes and performance tabs.

    MalwareBytes scan results.
    Most of them were PUP - Potentially Unwanted Programs.
    But games [which can come with Adware] made up most of the list.
    You may have wanted to keep - C:\Program Files\WeatherTool
    ======
    Run AdwCleaner again.
    Click on the Scan button.
    Let it scan your Pc - when that is done click on the Logfile button - not Cleaning.
    The report will appear on your desktop - Copy and Paste it into your next post.
    ======
    Download Junkware Removal Tool
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/junkware-removal-tool/

    Temporarily shutdown your anti-virus to avoid any conflicts.
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...nti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/
    Be sure to enable the anti-virus program after the scan.

    Right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as administrator (If using XP just double click on the icon to run it.)
    The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
    It will then shutdown your desktop and restart your pc - allow it to do so.
    On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
