I've had this problem occur a few times over the past week. It may be a hardware issue with my modem. (US Robotics 56k Win Modem) (I am running Win98.) I have disconnected from the internet on purpose or have heard my modem disconnect from the internet for whatever reason, which has always happened occasionally. And I usually just either reconnect or end my session.

But lately, I have heard my modem disconnect and I can pick up the phone and use it, so I know it is disconnected. However, if I try to reconnect, my computer says I am still connected and I am unable to get back online unless I reboot.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Do CTRL-ALT-DEL and see what's left running when you disconnect.
