    Hi and welcome to TSG,

I have moved your thread over to the XP forum where you're more likely to find the answers your looking for.

Not sure what your doing but you want to place the Windows XP CD in the CD Rom drive and press ALT/CTRL/DEL to reboot the PC . It should boot to the XP CD and give you the options to install XP.

If it doesn't Boot to the CD and give you a blue menu screen to install XP then it's not booting to the CD. In that case, you need to get into the BIOS setup and change the Boot Sequence to CDRom, Floppy, Hard Drive in that order.

To get into your BIOS setup, when the PC first powers on, you should see instructions on the screen to press a key to enter the BIOS Setup ..... It's usually the DEL or F1 key but you need to read the screen and be sure what key you need to press ....

Formatting an XP hard drive should never yield a message regarding windows 98 unless you have copied or are trying to copy windows 98 files onto the newly formatted drive. If your Bios is set to boot to the CD try both drive trays.

You may be in over your head on this and need a bit of experienced assistance in sorting out your problems. I would recommend qualified technician in your area as the quickest and least stressful means of a solution.
