PC randomly freezing after new Win7 installation

    I recently reinstalled Windows 7. Ever since I've done so my PC has been randomly freezing up, usually accompanied by a black screen and some kind of loud noise and I will either need to manually restart or it just shuts down itself. I've also had 1 or 2 blue screens. This happens once or twice a day and seems fairly random, could be mid game or whilst using just a browser.

    Whilst reinstalling Win 7 I chose to format the hard drive which did suggest it may delete necessary files etc, but I assumed it would be fine since it was a fresh installation.

    Is there something I have done wrong or anything? I didn't have any of these issues prior to reinstalling so I assume they're probably connected?

    Would appreciate any help :)

    You have done nothing wrong.

    Make a note the STOP error codes when you get blue screen.
    If you get Black screen when the computer is booting then Some booting files are deleted or wer not installed properly. The computer will freeze if the RAM capacity is less. Win7 needs at least 2GB to run properly.

    Most of the time when you get a Black screen error you will not find any error codes.
    You will get a Blinking cursor or nothing on the screen. The only fix for these issues it to re-install the OS...

    where did you get the windows 7 software - is it a retail copy

    Hi, thanks for the replies. I have 4GB of RAM, and I have been running Win7 without any problem on this PC since its release.

    My PC came with Vista but came with the Windows 7 upgrade option.

    do you have the blue screen details - stopcode and any file names

    have a look for some updated drivers on the PC manufacturers website
    video
    network
    audio
    are where i would start

    The most recent blue screen clicked off too fast for me to record what it said, unless there is another way to recover this information?

    But the Windows message when I rebooted said this:

    - advanced system settings > - link on left hand side

    startup and recovery - settings>
    under the title - system failure
    untick - automatically restart

    now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
    post the info on the screen
    it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

    i dont know how to read the mini dumps - hopefully someone who does will reply

    in the meantime - i would suggest running

    chkdsk
    and
    sfc /scannow

    I have run the Windows memory diagnostics test, chkdsk and scannow (Ran it as admin etc) and all have come back as finding no problems.

    Would I be just as well to reinstall again or will that not fix anything? When I reinstalled I only used my Win7 disc to do so, should I have installed Vista and then upgraded to Win7 or is that not necessary?

    if it was an upgrade CD then it would have asked to see the vista software - but as its installed all OK - i think thats fine

    Did you check the windows 7 upgrader site to ensure everything will work ok with windows 7

    it maybe worth attaching the dump files - I don't know how to read - but can have a go

    Yes I double checked with that checker and everythings compatible. I took the time to use a program called WhoCrashed, these were the results it came up with when it checked the dump files:

    Blue screened again, this time whilst trying to install Comodos firewall. This is the 2nd time this happened during installation of it.

    Hopefully I recorded all the relevant blue screen stop data.

    You posted you reinstalled win7. I assume you previously had win7 installed and it was working fine. Is that correct?

    Did you boot with your win7 install disk OR did you start the install from within windows?

    When you do an install of windows, it is generally best to install in this order;
    1 Install os
    2 Update to latest service pack; for win7 sp1
    3 Install your chipset/mb drivers
    4 Install any sound, nic, etc drivers as necessary
    5 Install video driver
    6 If all is well, then activate windows.
    7 Make an image backup of your clean install using either windows backup OR acronis true image. If you ever need to "clean install" again, it takes all of 5min or so to restore this image and you are done.
    8 Now do windows update and install all critical updates. Repeat until there are no critical updates to install.

    BTW whenever you do any install, it is best to download all of the patches, service pack, drivers, etc you will need and put those on a dvd, flash drive, external drive, etc. This makes the install go a LOT easier.
