i have a self built pretty decent rig, i5-750 OC'd to 3.8GHz, 4Gb Dominator Ram, 1Gb GFX, WD Caviar Black 1Tb, but recently it has really bogged down, and i cant find any reason for it.

On booting it takes a long time to be able to open any programs, much longer than it used to when new, even though i havent installed much since, and no apps open on boot, other than the Asus OC utility and fan control. I also have noticed even when idling lots more ram is being used up, 2.5Gb usually, which i never noticed before. I have uninstalled all the old software i dont use, defragged, done everything short of a repair with the windows dvd (would this be worth trying)

Any suggestions short of hardware upgrade (which i am waiting for ivybridge/HD 7000 series for) on what could be the cause, or any way to sort this would be very much appreiciated.

    TIA

What programs do you have installed and are using to combat viruses, malware, spyware, rogues, hijackers, etc.?

Have you used the task manager to look at what processes are running in the system? How do you manage and control the programs that start with the system?

i have windows own antivirus currently, did have avg but its just run out. use malware bytes for malware etc.
I use AVG TuneUp to control what opens at startup, and in task manager i have nothing that takes up any large chunks of cpu/ram when pc is idle. dont know where all the speed has gone.
    thanks

Stay away from cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup type programs, especially the ones that "clean" or "fix" the registry.

They won't do anything to improve speed, but what they can do is damage Windows and break programs.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Windows own antivirus".

Are you referring to Microsoft Security Essentials?

    ------------------------------------------------------

There can be any number of reasons why your computer is slowing and bogging down.

You appear to be doing some overclocking, so that may be one reason.
