    Hello,

    I am new to the forum, so please don't shoot the messenger on the first attempt :)
    My PC (win 98, Celeron 1.2 GH, 80 Gig HD primary split into two partitions, 40 gig HD in two partitions, both WD, on smart or cable select) is exhibiting behavior I can't explain. Shortly after turning it on, something is eating up sys resources down to approx. 7 or 8%. On startup, I do have a few programs, but nothing extravagant. Once I have about 3 IE sessions and maybe one more (Outlook or Word, etc.) open, no further action is possible. I get the error message of "No resources available for this action. Quite or close other programs".
    I can't even use the shortcut to minimize all windows.
    And once all programs are closed, and I try to re-open just one, the nasty message still comes up.

    I did read through previous posts and found Justin's post (Sluggish PC), yet wasn't quite sure how to tell whether my HDs are DMA enabled through the device manager. they do show going through the primary PCI ATA ultra controller.

    Any other ideas would be appreciated.
    Nick

    Follow the instructions on this link to remove the about:NavigationFailure trojan:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict4222.html

    Your startup programs (Programs running in the background) are too many, thereby depleting your resources.

    Go to Start->Run, type Msconfig and click Ok. Select the Startup tab. Deselect all programs from the list except for SystemTray, ScanRegistry and those programs related to Symantec (Norton) and Zone Alarm. You will be able to identify these programs since the command line includes the folder where the command file is being called from (Symantec and Zone Alarm). After selecting these programs. clik Apply then Ok, restart the computer when prompted.

    Deselected programs will not load at startup, thereby increasing your resources.

    I have to differ with your "I do have a few programs, but nothing extravagant" statement. Your computer's startup load is very bloated and needs to seriously be trimmed down. Other than ScanRegistry, SystemTray, antivirus entries, and firewall entries (as JSntgRvr has already told you), very few others need to run in the background. You can research the startup list by using the "search" option at this site.

    I agree. Post another HijackThis log so we can check the list of running processes.

    Read all these instructions carefully, Print them out and download all the things mentioned before starting

    First download CWshredder from http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html and install it and update it, DO not run it yet
    Also
    Click here to download AboutBuster created by Rubber Ducky.

    Unzip AboutBuster to the Desktop then click the "Update Button" then click "Check for Update" and download the updates and then click "Exit" because I don't want you to run it yet. Just get the updates so it is ready to run later in safe mode.

    Sign off the internet and remain offline until this procedure is complete. Unplug your modem or disconnect the cable or phone line. Copy these instructions to notepad and save them on your desktop for easy access. You must follow these directions exactly and you cannot skip any part of it.

    Now boot into safe mode

    How to start your computer in safe mode

    Next run aboutbuster. Double click aboutbuster.exe, click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.

    then Run Cwshredder
    Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

    reboot and post a new log

    The list of running processes is not as large as before, but there's still more of them that you can disable from starting up.

    Click here to download StartDreck.

    UnZip the startdreck.zip file first. DoubleClick: 'StartDreck.exe'
    First click on the config button.
    Now click the Unmark all button
    Put a check by these boxes only:
    *Registry->run keys
    *Registry->Browser helper objects
    *System/drivers> Running processes
    hit >ok.

    Now click the Save button to save that log. Go to the StartDreck folder and find the Startdreck.log file.

    Copy and Paste the contents of that log back here and await further instructions.
