PC Starts and then shuts down

Windows 7 has recently failed to start up/start up properly and hold, on our desktop machine.
We get the standard screen, which either quickly shuts down, or may remain for a few minutes before shutting down.
None of the icons on the task bar (Internet services etc) will link. A day before this started, our printer's programme was also strange, and would not select print, only scan. It did print but without proper content of page.
I'm wondering if the current start up problem is due to missing or corrupted dll's or drivers, or if it's something else.
Also wondering if the printer/scanner problem is connected.

Hi, start the pc in Safe Mode - keep tapping F8 as the pc is starting up.
Once in Safe Mode try a System Restore.
Start button > Search > Type rstrui.exe
In System Restore > choose a date prior to the problem you are having.
If you can check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
If you can run System File Checker.
Click on Start - Search - Type cmd
Right click on cmd.exe - select Run as Administrator.
At the Command Prompt window - Type sfc /scannow
Press Enter.

Let it run until it completes the scan.
It can take 2-3 runs of system file checker for all files to be replaced/repaired.
Let us know if any of the above helps you.
