    Hi,
If a PC has onboard graphic support but lacks an AGP port, would a PCI graphic card (are they really available now?) be better in terms of the lower cost one would incur to buy it than upgrade to an AGP compliant motherboard, and the performance edge it would have over onboard graphics?

    Thanks.

Onboard graphics cards are tied to either the PCI bus or the AGP bus depending on the motherboard. They really don't have a performance advantage if you have a PCI card that is the same config as the onboard one. The only real drawback of an onboard card is adding memory or shared system memory. The add on cards give you the flexibility to change features, memory and chipsets with a new card.

I don't know if we're saying the same thing, Rockn. Your wording is a bit...involved, for my understanding :)

But the way I get it, addon cards have specialised memory (VRAM, SDRAM, RDRAM...) customised for video tasks, whereas integrated chips have to use a portion of system RAM. As such, not being able to use these specialised memory, their graphics performance will likely be inferior.

Not all onboard graphics use system memory and most good ones don't, they have it soldered on the board as well. If they in fact do use system memory they will be slower than their standalone counterpart.
