I notice this when I first played Half-Life. I would start at 100 FPS stable and then drop to 40's for 15-25 seconds. Afterwards I would go back to 100 FPS and maintain it but the problem persists throughout gameplay. I thought it was my GPU but this started to happen when I am watching videos on Youtube. It would feel laggy/choppy hard to watch for a bit then become normal. I checked task manager and one thing that I noticed was that under the CPU column in task manager under the processes tab, when these periodic "lags" happen, the CPU usuage (I'm guessing that's what it means for that column) goes to 0 for all processes whether it's Firefox, Chrome, or explorer. It would be at 10-20 CPU usage and then when the lag hits, it hits 0 and the CPU usage goes to 0 and System Idle Process goes to 100.

Does anyone know what's wrong ?

    I am currently running;

    Intel Pentium 4
    2GB RAM
    FX5200 Graphics Card

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

If you are using it, what if you bypass that proxy server of yours? Any difference?

    What is this "it"?

I am not aware that I am on a proxy server. Can you explain?

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = strain.ccs.com:80

That would be in your Internet Explorer browser connections settings. Open IE, click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings.

HijackThis will show proxies, wether they are active or not.

You seem to be using Google Chrome as your Web browser. Make sure you don't have a proxy enabled in there too.

    What's the processor speed?

What type of RAM modules are installed?

How much video memory does the graphics card have?

I'm not a gamer, but I'm wondering if your computer's hardware can handle the heavy system requirements of those games. It appears to be a fairly old computer.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Your computer appears to have several outdated or obsolete programs and may need some de-cluttering.

If you're prompted to restart your computer to complete the uninstall of any of them, do so.

After you're done, restart your computer one last time.

Next, download and save these programs.

    Adobe Reader 9.3

    Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2

    Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.20 Java(TM) 6 Update 20

    HijackThis 2.0.4

Close all open windows first, then install them.

If you're prompted to restart your computer to complete the install of any of them, do so.

After you're done, restart your computer one last time.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished and the log appears, copy-and-paste it here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

The startup load in that computer needs trimming down, but that'll have to wait until a new HijackThis log is submitted.

Start HijackThis, then click "Do a system scan only".

When the scan finishes and the list of log entries appear, put a checkmark in these log entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ac...4902314645609326891780753602288327212044060&S O={4E415600-2005-0000-0000-000000000000}

    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user')

After you confirm you've selected the correct log entries, click "Fix Checked - Yes".

    Close HijackThis.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in the startup entries that I've highlighted in bold text.

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on the entry that I've highlighted in bold text.

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

Close the window, then restart your computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears during restart, ignore the message.

Put a checkmark in that window, then click OK to close it.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Start HijackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished and the log appears, copy-and-paste it here.
