running windows xp, cable modem motorola, airlink 101 wireless router -- computer that is lossing connection is direct wired to router, not wireless. also have a vonage box direct to router. the wireless laptop maintains connection just fine. it's the desktop that loses connection for no apparent reason -- can't find websites and no email with eudora. rebooting restores connection. all lights are on on modem.
have checked device manager, nothing obvious. also cmd propmt ping and get 100% lost packets even when connection is there. tried to ipconfig /all but command window flashes too quick to see even trying break or escape. have shut down some services a few months back -- could a service be the culprit.
would appreciate any help.

"could a service be the culprit."

Sure. Did the problem start when you shut down services? If so, which ones did you shut down?

Please show for when have a connection and after it is lost ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

"still can't break pause or print screen on ipconfig."

Please see post #3: "Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:".

Do you lose connection or just lose the ability to resolve names? If the latter Start the 'DNS service' and change its Startup Type to 'Automatic.' If you still have the problem, Start the 'Network Location Awareness (NLA)' service and change its Startup Type to 'Manual.'

If the PC can't ping its own IP address it's almost always a 3rd party firewall (internet security) blocking.

If you lose connection you can't ping the router, much less an internet site.

If you just lose the ability to resolve names you can ping the router and ping a web site by IP address (e.g., 216.109.112.135), but cannot ping a web site by name (e.g., yahoo.com).

Recommend that you uninstall it or properly configure it for the access desired. 'Disbled' they sometimes still block stuff.
