Does anyone know if there may be a record on the PC of all devices that were ever attached?

I think I remember reading somewhere that XP keeps a record of all devices ever attached and uses that record the next time that it sees that a device is re-attached... some kind of eternal device list...

I searched my registry but found nothing that looks like that.

More Info:

I found some references to "Ghost Devices", devices that are installed but not attached.

That's what you're looking for. Windows will check the full Device Manager listing (which includes the "Ghost Devices" when something gets plugged in. If the device ID's match, Windows loads the previously installed drivers for the "Ghost Device", and the newly plugged in device is ready. Speeds things up a bit, that's all.

I am not sure why you aare asking. However, if you open Device Manager and click View > Show hidden devices, it will show everything that has ever been installed if it has not intentionally been removed.
