My OS is windows 7 I use a Freecom 500gb external drive and find that I am requested to seek permission from the administrator (myself I think) to delete some files that have many digit numbers and are empty.I find I cannot delete them there are about a dozen of them

Usually this is because the files are "in use". They cannot be removed while they are being accessed. Sometimes, what that is might be hard to find, but there are many programs that run in the background to monitor images, some installed along with printers.

You can use these to remove the files on next boot:

    Unlocker
    Emco Move On Boot
    UnlockIt
    FreeFile

Or, you can try to find out what process is locking the files:

    OpenedFilesView

But be careful about deleting files if you do not know what they are.
