    I've been getting calls from numbers I don't recognize. I don't answer. I figure if they're legit, they'll leave a message.

Well they don't leave a message & they keep calling. When I call to find out who it is, I get a recording that says the number is not in service.

Is it possible for someone to set up a number that they can call from but that cannot be called & is listed as not even being in service?

How would they do that? Who would have such capabilities & why would they do that?

    Thanks.

With certain digital phone services, a caller can make it appear that the number they are calling from can be any number they want. It's called spoofing. It makes it impossible for you to report them for Do Not Call List violations. They may try to make the number appear to come from the same area code and exchange in the hope that you will answer a local phone call. They can also change the number often enough so that you blocking the last number won't help any.

Is there anything I can do to identify the spoofer? Is there anything I can do to stop them?

There is little or nothing you can do yourself to identify the spoofer. I doubt you could get law enforcement involved unless a major felony has been committed.

As for stopping them, find out if your phone service provider offers a free blocking service from NoMoRobo ( https://www.nomorobo.com/ ). They may not eliminate, but can greatly cut down on spam robocalls. I use it and have noticed a major reduction in spam robocalls and it has done wonders on cutting down on robocalls from politicians looking to get elected or re-elected.

Note: If you use NoMoRobo you may hear your phone ring one time on Robocalls. The phone company sends you and NoMoRobo the caller ID for the incoming call after the first ring and NoMoRobo can usually check the number, and intercept the call if need be before you hear the second ring.

Well, I personally will just ignore those kind of calls. They are just a waste of time. I usually just let them leave some VMs and look up the numbers on Google or some sites like http://whycall.me and immediately block if people have reported them as scams.

heyarchit098, don't drag up 7 week old posts. There are enough problems to solve that are a week old or newer.
The original poster hasn't been here since February 19th so he might have solved the problem with the #4 post on that day.
