well if you have photoshop - why not do it all in photoshop

use the magic wand to select the purple - then delete

the pictures rather small, so i'm not really sure what you want to do

    make a " siggy " ???? sorry explain

funny looking smilie...is laying on it's side or something...

Do you have a larger version?

also...if you are trying to make a "siggy" to put in your signature here...forget it there not allowed... ;)

OK so do as I said
    in photoshop
    copy as a new layer
select the purple with magic wand
    inverse selection
feather by .5 pixel on that size
    delete
then delete the original background layer
    you should have one layer
purple face on a transparent background

yep - almost as I described
    made a copy layer
    worked on the copy layer

i increased the tolerance on the magic wand to 50, clicked on a bit of the purple deep colour - after the selection and went round and added any bits that had been missed because a pixel or two where white.

    inverted the selection
    feathered by 0.3
    deleted

    then deleted the bottom layer

left with purple on transparent - hence its background is gray here.

saved as gif to preserve transparency - if save as jpg the background will go white
